Landy & Rina - Technology Fair Winners!

(This is a post I brought over from Mrs. Davis' Reflective Voices --thanks Mrs. Davis!) Wow! Landy and Rina tied for first place at the local technology fair. Their entry placed in the "Web 2.0 Internet Applications!" Just think, a few years ago such a category would not have even existed!  Trend setters - that's what these two young students are and we are so very proud of them! Rina and landy

American Education Week

We are celebrating American Education Week at school. The students wrote essays about what they would do if they were the Principal. Other activities for the week are giving thanks to volunteers and support staff at our school. This includes the PTA, teacher assistants, custodians, office staff, and cafeteria workers. Everyone works together to make JH House a great place for learning!

TV or NO TV?

We are beginning a persuasive essay next week. The topic involves an idea started from tvturnoff.org. It encourages communities and families to spend one week with no TV at all! Could you do that? I love television, so it would be very hard for me. However, I think a week with no TV might be a good way to spend more quality time with my family and maybe get outside and be more active. Share your thoughts and opinions with us. I know the class will be full of strong opinions on this topic!

If I Had a Wish Giver

The_wish_giverIn class we just finished reading the book The Wish Giver. In the story, Thaddus Blinn gives 4 people a card with a red dot on it. He says they can make one wish with it. They all begin to wish for something they have always wanted. However, soon the wishes begin to backfire and trouble starts. The class really enjoyed reading this book, and we have all discussed what we might wish for if given a card with a red dot. What would you wish for? Be careful as wishes don't always come true like how you might imagine!

Falling for Fall

Autum_leaves_2  Fall is one of my favorite seasons. I love the changing leaves and cooler weather. This season also gives us a chance to read and write some exciting stories. Next week we'll begin our scary stories using vivid words and details. Hopefully, they won't be too scary.....

What's in a Name

Vanity_mirror

Why is our class blog called 5th Grade Reflections? I am glad you asked! Well, of course, part of it is easy--we are 5th graders. But the reflection part is a longer story. As we grow as students, reflecting on our learning is essential. We want to think deeply about what we are learning, why it is important, and how it is helping us in our real life (our life away from school). Look for ways we are being reflective in our posts this year. Also, write comments to our posts and ask us questions to support good, reflective thinking.

Let the Blogging Begin!

Another school year has begun, and I am excited to be blogging with another class. So far the class is off to a great start! We have already visited 2 blogs and made comments: Harley's and Carl Azuz from CNN.

We are looking forward to a great year where we can reflect about our learning!
